The Work/Life Balance and Being Organized

If you read many of the posts that I write for Creative Income you probably know that I’ve had one business or another since I was in High School. Even when I was a young mother, with three boys and going to college full time I STILL had a business.

Actually, during that time I had TWO businesses but that’s a story for another day.

I have been asked quite often how I can do all of the things I do and today I’m sharing my secrets. They aren’t sexy secrets but they work.

My secret for getting everything done is to be super organized and to have routines.

I’m a big believer in both.

To be honest, when I was much younger I felt that routines & organization were restricting and I wasn’t so much into them. I went out of my way to NOT have routines and I paid the price. Bills were late, inspections on one of my businesses were always a HUGE hassle, and I didn’t meet some deadlines.

I paid for my rebellion.

As I have gotten older though I see FREEDOM in routines and organization. I don’t even have to think about what needs done or when. It’s just built into my days. I’m not late with books to the library, assignments for manufacturers or to the play my son is in. I don’t lose things nearly as often and I can run my business, keep up with family AND maintain a relatively clean home.

I’ve worked though lots of organizing systems in my life and never has one been created that satisfied me 100%. My life always required a little tweaking to the organizational tools but usually there was no way to customize the tool to make it work for me. I probably have wasted a good bit of money over the years trying this plan or that one.

A couple of years ago though I decided to create my own system and I’ve been working with it since. It works for me because I can change it up as my needs change. Finally, something that works for me and helps me to stay on track!

No, it hasn’t made my life perfect nor has it solved ALL of my problems but it does help me to stay organized and focused.

So enough about me… now let’s talk about you.

At the bottom of this post there is a link for DAILY ROUTINES that is a downloadable Exel spreadsheet. I didn’t upload it as a PDF so that YOU can go in and make changes as needed. Because I know your life is probably pretty different from mine and you’ll want to make some changes.

Go ahead, download it.

You’ll see that there is a tab for each day of the week and you’ll notice that I do a few things slightly different each day. Change up the items in the TO DO list make columns wider or longer. It’s for you to use in a way that will work for you.

You can print it out each day or keep it on your laptop or notebook device. If you have the right app you may even be able to access it from your phone.

Let me know if you give it a try and how it works for you. I’d also love to know what changes you make. Maybe you’ve thought of something I haven’t!

  1. Wow that is awesome, I do the same thing because of the same reasons even though it’s not the same technique :P. I was doing it in a task pad everything I needed to be done on the next day and some times the next of the next :P. I agree 100% if we organize the activities there is time for everything but it doesn’t mean that it is always going to work because some days things go crazy. The important part is not to get frustrated like me :O XD.
Thank you very much for the sharing, this is exactly what I wanted to do but didn’t know how.

I will use this. Since I work fulltime, I’ll have to change it up QUITE a bit, but being helf responsible to a to do list will really help kick start my lazy butt. Once I get home from work I quick make dinner then plop in my chair with a project. The other things I need to do never get done without nagging (yes, he can nag, too).
